About Us
The Coroners' Officers Association (COA) was originally formed in November 1997 to enhance the understanding of the role of coroners' officers and share knowledge and promote professional development for those working within the Coroner service. In 2011, the name of the association was changed to the Coroners' Officers and Staff Association. (COASA).
For over two decades, we have worked with the respective Government departments with responsibility for the Coroner Service such as the Home Office, Department for Constitutional Affairs, and the Minstry of Justice. We contributed to the Fundamental Review of the Coroner's Service and gave evidence to the Shipman Inquiry and to the drafting process of the new Coroners and Justice Act (2009) and the Department of Health proposal for changes to the death certification and the introduction of medical examiners.
The COASA has delivered over 50 study days and has contributed to the development of university accredited short courses.
The COASA is not a Trade union or part of the Police Federation; our position is that of an independent professional body providing a voice for those who work within the Coroner service .
The objects of the Association are to:
- Represent those working within the service.
- Share knowledge and experience to advance the expertise of coroners' officers and coroners' staff.
- Formulate and promote continuous professional development for coroners' officers and coroners' staff.
- Pursue national standards of working practices for all coroners' officers and coroners' staff.
- Pursue national standards of training and resoucres for all coroners' officers and coroners' staff.
- Act as an advisory body when required.
- Act as liaison on matters concerning coroners' officers and coroners' staff with any relevant government department or other organisation or association.
There is of course a good deal more to do but we can only progress if we grow as a body of professionals. Why not join us and add your voice to ours and positively affect the future for all staff working in the coroner service?
DISCLAIMER: THE COASA IS NOT ABLE TO ADVISE OR COMMENT ON INDIVIDUAL CASES. WE WOULD ADVISE ANYONE WITH CONCERNS ABOUT A CASE TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE SENIOR CORONER IN THE AREA WHO IS DEALING WITH THE CASE.
